With 1500km of coastline, you’re never too far from a beach in Sicily. But what if you want to hit the sand without the hassle of loading up the car with all the beach paraphernalia? In Sicily, there are plenty of villas and apartments that are right on the beach, with the sand or sea directly accessible from your back door. Oasivera, Noto

Set on the border of the Vendicari Nature Reserve in southeast Sicily, Oasivera is a mere 200m from the beach. Sicily’s southernmost beaches are some of the best on the island, flanked by crystal clear water and a glorious mix of small coves and powder-soft sandy bays. Casa Ulisse and Villa Marea, Pozzallo

A 50m stroll separates the golden sands of the nearby beach from Casa Ulisse, a 3-bedroom property close to Capo Passero. Relax back on the terrace and soak up the sound of the waves while you gaze out over sprawling lawns dotted with palm trees and leafy Mediterranean plants. Family Villa Marea is Ideally situated for a week of sun and sand, with direct access to the very child-friendly sandy beach at Santa Maria del Focallo in south east Sicily.

Villa lo Scoglio and Villa Renata, Fontane Bianche

With sea views on three sides, Villa Lo Scoglio is awash with sea breezes and the sound of the sea.  Private steps lead from the terraces down to the water’s edge where a small ladder is fixed to the rocks. The sandy beach of Fontane Bianche is close by. Alternatively, check in to Villa Renata and just nip through the garden gate on to Fontane Bianche’s gently shelving sands. The resort is popular with families thanks to its well-equipped lidos and the ease of shopping and eating out in town. The 4-bedroom villa has an extra annexe (sleeps 2-4) and attractive garden with pool.

Villa Silva, Licata

If you’re tempted by a slightly more rough and ready beach experience, head for the small village of Manfria, to the south of Agrigento, where Villa Silva has direct access to a beautiful sandy beach. A series of terraces, bordered by flowering Mediterranean shrubs, lead down via a stone archway on to the beach.

Enjoy an equally authentic experience when you stay at Terrazza sul Mare. Although perfectly placed for visits to the popular locations of Mount Etna and Taormina, the villa is situated in the little-known, but very charming, fishing port of Pozzillo. When you need to cool off, just wander down the stone steps to a tiny pebbly beach below.

Villa Giacona Venuti and Villa Stella Terrasini

Terrasini is pretty seaside town, conveniently located a short drive from Palermo airport. Its rocky coastline is dotted with caves and creeks, interspersed with sandy beaches such as Praiola Terrasini.  On the south side of the town, Villa Giacona Venuti is a traditional 6-bedroom villa with excellent facilities for a group. Lounge by the pool or on the terrace and wander down to a secluded bay used only by neighbouring villas and a local diving club.  Close by, Villa Stella also provides the twin option of sea and pool swimming. The 4-bedroom villa has a private path leading down to a sunbathing platform and the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Just 20km from the lively town of Cefalù, Casa dei Nomadi is a dream villa for any beach lover.
