Many people generally begin their Sicilian vacations in the beautiful city of Palermo. There are many things to do in Palermo, as it is not just a jumping off point to the rest of the island. The city has its own rich history and attractions for visitors. Here is a good list of what to do in Palermo, whether you only have a day or a week. First you have to take a stroll down via Vittorio Emanuele, in the historic center, where most of Palermo’s attractions are. The Palazzo dei Normanni is beautiful structure adorned with Byzantine mosaics, then walk down a few blocks to the Palermo cathedral which dwarfs anything nearby. It is an eclectic mix of Morrish, Gothic and neoclassical styles; a great representation of the rich history of Palermo and its many suitors.

The shopping in Palermo is especially nice because of the Palermo market. The Vucciria Market has incredible crafts, clothes and Mediterranean delights. The market is an amazing 700 years old. The nightlife in Palermo is also great, be sure to check out any of the Saints Day festivals if you happen to be in the city and enjoy feasting on the amazing food of Palermo.

The city is on the northern shore of Sicily so beaches are near Palermo. Be sure to take a day trip to San Vito lo Capo, Isola delle Femmine or Mondello. There are even some great beach festivals to see in spring. No matter what, you can’t go wrong visiting the wonderful city of Palermo. It has so much to offer and is worth any time spent there.
