The area

The property is ideally situated both for trips to the sea – 10 minutes’ drive away in Sampieri, where the beach is slightly wilder and fringed with dunes, though there are many other beaches along the coast within easy driving distance which are great for surfers and windsurfers and have sun beds and umbrella for rent - and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful towns: the Baroque UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Scicli, Modica, Ragusa and Noto. Siracusa and its ancient Greek Theatre is also within easy driving distance as are the quiet beaches of the Nature Reserve at Vendicari.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Marina di Ragusa have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.

For the best views around, head for Ragusa Ibla and take in the breath-taking sight of the city from the dizzy heights of the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Scale.

Also nearby is the pretty fishing village of Marzamemi which hosts an International Film Festival in July but is worth visiting at any time for its superb seafront fish restaurants and its lively piazza. Slightly further afield is Catania and Mount Etna.

We were lucky enough to stay at the villa for 1 week in August 2023. It’s superb, having lots of space and a fantastic and well maintained garden and pool. The Villa is tastefully furnished and well maintained. Oriana, the manager, is lovely - always available to help and takes care to ensure we had a relaxing time. The villa is well located for excellent beaches and the nearest town, Scicli was our favourite of those we visited.

We spent 1 week in July in Villa Antica Aia. We particularly liked the outside of the house which is beautiful with the garden and its tropical trees! The trees provide shade which is great on hot summer days. The villa is high up from the sea but only a 10 minute drive away. The interior of the house is charming and the house is large. The kitchen is a bit old and lacks a bit of ameneties for the more demanding guests. Oriana, the manager, is very kind, available and accommodating. The Sicilians in the area are all very welcoming too. We recommend this charming house for holidays!

We had the most relaxing and recuperative two weeks at this perfectly located wonderful villa! It was a struggle to leave the comfort and privacy of the house and it’s amazing amenities but the surrounding area is full of numerous family friendly beaches and stunning towns to explore. Oriana and Matteo were the most charming hosts and nothing was too much trouble - she even arranged for someone to come in and keep the place spotless whilst we were out and for hire bikes to be delivered to the house for my two boys! Certainly the best concierge service we have ever experienced - I just wish I could replicate that back at home!! We had the best holiday ever and can’t wait to return to our very own Sicilian “home from home”! Grazie di Tutto Oriana 🙏🏼

This was my second time here. This time we were 7 friends from Scotland and Germany. No one wanted to leave this beautiful house and have to say goodbye to Oriana who is not just the most wonderful, welcoming hostess but also a lovely person. The house and gardens with olives, pomegranates, pears, quinces and the scent of lavender hedges are a delight.Good use was made of the pool and comfortable loungers. We also had a splendid barbecue. The region is so beautiful and offers something for everyone from baroque churches, beaches ,a museum of the history of chocolate (Modica)excellent regional cuisine, the Montalbano experience and don’t miss the ice cream parlour in Donnalucata. Noto,Ragusa and Scicli are within easy reach and all stunning. This year we also went a little further to Villa Romana del Casale with its fabulous mosaics,a Unesco Heritage Site. Villa Antica Aia is simply perfection!

Villa Antica Aia is a five star experience in respect of both the property’s ambience and the host’s hospitality. Oriana and her family’s hospitality surpassed all other’s that we have before experienced in any self-catering hire. We received immediate and helpful response to all communications and her delightful welcoming Sicilian pastries and confectionaries were excellent - in particular the children made short work of the cookies! The furnishing and decoration of the Villa is perfectly balanced and it felt really homely. The functional and well equipped kitchen and BBQ were a pleasure to use. The garden is nicely laid out. While it was still quite cold when we visited the children (and some adults) enjoyed the pool which is screened from the wind and surroundings by tall hedges. The Villa lies a tranquil rural setting within about a 10 minute drive to supermarkets, butchers and restaurants; good recommendations are found in the ‘house-booklet’. It is ideally situated as a base from which to explore and discover the charms and history of the baroque towns of the Syracuse-Ragusa region. Beaches, such as that at Marina di Modica and much liked by the children, are a few kilometres away. Oriana drew our attention to the extensive Tuesday local market in Scicli. The beginners Italian lesson given in the Villa garden by Paola, who has studied English at University in Sicily and Dublin and by working in Ireland, covered introductions, telling the time, and ordering at restaurants - it was really practical and very useful. One word of caution to those not familiar with the roads and the towns of the region - some streets (and some roads) are VERY narrow. Go with the smallest hire car you feel comfortable.
