Overview

OverviewJust a stone’s throw from a string of powder soft sandy beaches along the south east coast of Sicily, Casa degli Oleandri is a great choice for a budget break in the sun. For anyone who wants to delve deeper into this fascinating corner of the island, the villa is ideally situated less than 10km from Scicli and within easy reach of several other magnificent baroque towns, including Modica, Ispica and Ragusa.

The villa overlooks a spacious garden, with large palm tree-dotted lawns and an attractive pool with graduated steps. Steps lead from the lawn up to the raised terrace, where you can enjoy meals overlooking the garden, protected from the sun by ample shade.

The villa is situated on one level, with additional attic space. It is modestly furnished but with everything you would need in a holiday home. Sliding glass doors lead from the garden either into the fully-equipped kitchen or into the conservatory-style dining area and there is a separate living room, with stairs up to the raised level.

With sleeping accommodation for up to 9 people, there are five bedrooms: 2 double bedrooms, 1 single room, a third double in the galleried area above the living room, and a twin-bedded room in the attic. The two bathrooms each have a shower and there is an additional toilet in the galleried space.

Area

Get ready to be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. The closest beach is just a couple of km away, at Sampieri, a wonderful stretch of golden sand with a pretty beachfront ‘lungomare’ and crystal-clear water. Other popular spots include Ponente and Micenci at Donnalucata, and the beach at Marina di Ragusa. Further east, the beach at Santa Maria del Focallo is relatively tourist-free, with translucent shallow water.

When you want a break from the beach, set off to explore the gorgeous baroque UNESCO world heritage towns inland. Start with the closest and possibly most understated, at Scicli. Best-known for its connection with the fictional character of Inspector Montalbano, the town is surrounded by the rugged scenery of a gorge that’s pitted with former cave-dwellings. Be sure to visit the 18th century Palazzo Beneventano and San Bartolomeo church. Further afield, the towns of Modica and Ragusa continue the baroque theme.

Still heading inland, eastwards, Ispica is home to more baroque churches and palaces but is best known for the Cava Ispica, a 13-km long canyon peppered with former cave dwellings and burial sites. Another 20km or so beyond Ispica, the town of Noto is one of the most spectacular of the region’s baroque towns.

We had a wonderful stay at the villa. The place was very nice and the owner was incredibly welcoming. All of our requests were handled on time, and communication was excellent throughout. The villa is located in a very quiet area, just 4 km from the beach, with restaurants nearby. Even though it’s close to everything, it feels peaceful and away from the city noise – perfect for relaxing. If you’re looking for a sunny and calm place to chill, this is the perfect spot. We were a group of 9 adults and 1 child (2 years old), and the villa was spacious and comfortable for all of us. Highly recommended!
