Terrazza sul Mare is an attractive two-bedroom villa, with steps down to the sea and terrace views over the tiny fishing port at Pozzillo on Sicily’s east coast. Located just outside Acireale, Pozzillo is the perfect base for visits to Mount Etna and for exploring Taormina, Catania and, further south, Syracuse and Noto.
The villa is ideal for anyone looking for a more authentic experience of Sicily. The pace of life is slower than in some of the better-known resorts and the villa’s proximity to the sea means you can relax on the terrace at night and watch the blinking lights of the fishing boats out at sea. Buy fresh fish at the stall which sets up shop each morning on the nearest street corner or tuck into some superb seafood and traditional cuisine at any of the excellent local trattorie in Acireale and on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Entry into the villa is on the ground floor which leads straight out on to an expansive covered terrace with sea views. Furnished with a dining table, lounge-style chairs and a sofa, the terrace provides an additional ‘al fresco’ living room during the warmer summer months. When you need to cool off, wander down to the rocks and a tiny pebbly beach via stone steps straight from the villa.
The living area is on the first floor, comprising a small living room with sofa bed, kitchen and attractive bathroom with shower. There are two double bedrooms, one with an en suite toilet (no shower) and air conditioning.

The area
Under an hour by car from Catania, Terrazza sul Mare is in a great position for exploring much of Sicily’s east coast. Start off with the town of Acireale, best known for its Mardi Gras carnival but also worth visiting for its fine baroque buildings, including the Cathedral and the Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo. The main shops are along the Corso Umberto I while the best views are from the gardens of the Villa Belvedere.
Many of the beaches along the craggy coastline of the Riviera dei Ciclopi are stony which means fewer crowds. There is an attractive sandy beach at Torre Pozzillo and access to several sandy beaches at the Timpa Nature Reserve. If you are looking for more of a buzz – and some great shops – head north to Taormina where shop windows are glitzy and glamorous and the coastal views are spectacular.
A day trip to the ancient Greek city of Syracuse, which is around 100km to the south, is well worth the effort. If you prefer to stay closer to home, ask us about the various excursions and activities on Mount Etna, including hiking and cycling tours and wine-tasting at the superb wineries on the volcano’s lower slopes. For anyone keen on adventure activities, a range of land and water-based activities are available at the Alcantara Gorge to the north of Acireale.

17-09-2019 -The apartment is in wonderful spot with fantastic views, excellent facilities and simple access to the sea. A really nice local restaurant and small bar for pastries are within simple walking distance. The owner was a really helpful host and provided us with top tips and useful advice.Some really excellent restaurants nearby including Acquapazza which is well signposted. It felt like an authentic local experience. We only used the top floor flat. An excellent place for two families looking to use the communal space but have their own privacy. You need a car if you're staying here. Wish Sicily is an excellent company, good value and easy to deal with. Seem to have local roots.
