Two immersive days filled with ancient history, art and the treasures of Norman Sicily.

A two-day journey through Sicily's Norman heritage, from royal Palermo to the Madonie

Overview

sicily

History, art and culture come together on this two-day journey through the world of Norman Sicily. With an expert licensed guide, discover the extraordinary monuments of Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù and continue into the Madonie to medieval Castelbuono.

Almost a thousand years ago, the Normans transformed Sicily into one of medieval Europe's most remarkable kingdoms. Their encounter with Arab, Byzantine and Latin cultures created a distinctive legacy that can still be seen in the island's architecture, mosaics and historic towns. The experience also reveals the fascinating connections between Norman Sicily and the wider Norman story that reshaped England and Europe.

Day 1 – Palermo and Monreale

Begin in Palermo, once the capital of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. Your guide will lead you through the city's Arab-Norman heritage, with particular focus on the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel, where Byzantine mosaics, Islamic-inspired decoration and Norman architecture meet in one extraordinary setting.

Continue to Monreale, overlooking the Conca d'Oro, to visit its magnificent Norman Cathedral, commissioned by William II in the 12th century. Inside, vast golden mosaics cover the walls, while the adjoining cloister offers a quieter masterpiece of medieval architecture with its beautifully decorated columns.

Throughout the day, your guide will bring the personalities and stories of Norman Sicily to life, explaining how Palermo became a meeting point between Western Europe, Byzantium and the Islamic Mediterranean.

Day 2 – Cefalù and Castelbuono

The second day takes you along Sicily's northern coast to Cefalù. Dominating the historic town is its great Norman Cathedral, commissioned by Roger II and now part of the UNESCO-listed Arab-Norman heritage of Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù. Inside, the celebrated mosaic of Christ Pantocrator is one of Sicily's great medieval treasures.

After time to explore Cefalù's historic streets, continue into the Madonie to Castelbuono, a charming medieval town surrounded by mountains and woodland. Discover its historic centre and castle with your guide, before enjoying some free time to experience the town's atmosphere and local traditions.

Join us on this guided journey to discover the remarkable Norman story of Sicily and the cultural connections that linked the island with medieval Europe.
