Casa a Ortigia This property has been verified by our local team in Sicily Apartments in Sicily in Siracusa

Description

Perfect for a short city break in the sun, Casa a Ortigia is a contemporary two-bedroom villa with a secluded roof terrace, situated on the waterfront on Syracuse’s atmospheric Ortigia island. The sea is just moments away and there are some wonderful beaches to the south of Syracuse but the main highlight of this location is the incredible history and architecture of this atmospheric city.

Spacious and stylish, the newly-refurbished villa is filled with natural light and fresh sea breezes, with polished wooden floors running throughout the house and several rooms looking directly out over the sea. On the ground floor, there is a dining-room with a double height ceiling and, accessed via a few steps, a bright, modern living room, with doors leading out to a small standing balcony. The kitchen is well-equipped, with a breakfast table, and double doors on to a second balcony.

The two double bedrooms are extremely roomy. The first of the two, together with one of the bathrooms, is on the ground floor. The main staircase leads up to the double bedroom and en suite bathroom on the first floor, and to a small roof terrace, with a table, chairs and umbrella, which is the ideal spot for an early morning coffee or for soaking up some rays at the end of a busy day.

Just across the road from the villa, a public sunbathing platform has direct access into the sea. There is also a pebbly beach less than 10 minutes’ walk away.

The area

Situated in the very heart of Ortigia, the historic centre of Syracuse, the villa is perfectly placed for exploring everything there is to see in this exceptional city that was the home town of Archimedes and, for many years, was one of the four most significant cities of Ancient Greece. Stroll through the maze of narrow lanes and streets until you reach the magnificent honey-hued Piazza del Duomo, the island’s nucleus. Here, you can visit the Duomo, the Palazzo Beneventano and the church of Santa Lucia. The 13th century Castello Maniace, the Fonte Aretusa and the food market on Via de Benedictis are just a few of the other local attractions.

Syracuse’s vast archaeological park, comprising a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre and several caves, is one of the city’s principal magnets and if you are visiting between May and July, you can take in a live performance of a Greek drama at the theatre. For fans of baroque architecture, the towns of Noto and Palazzolo Acreide are within easy reach, with Ragusa and Modica a little further away.

For beach-lovers who want to explore the wonderful sandy shores along Sicily’s south east tip, there are several options. To the south of Syracuse, Arenella beach and the long stretches of fine golden sand and crystal clear water at Fontane Bianche (15km from Syracuse) are great for families. Further south still, the hidden bays that border the Vendicari nature reserve, are slightly further off the beaten track, with few facilities but gorgeous powder-soft sand and translucent water.

Just next to the rear entrance to the house, there is a lovely cafè which also offers an in-villa daily breakfast service on request.

The apartment is really wonderful. It is perfectly positioned and we loved listening to sea each evening when we returned and in the morning. The Views from the apartment are also stunning. The owner has carefully thought through every aspect of the apartment and it is beautifully furnished. The wine and fruit left for us were also nice touches. I have rented apartments in many other places in Italy, Europe and the US and this is one of the nicest we have stayed in.

This property was outstanding in every way. Very comfortable and spacious, in a fantastic position, with a great kitchen, a beautifully decorated home, and made our stay a memorable experience. Wish Sicily provided good service and information. Theresa and Andrea were extremely helpful and prompt to reply to our emails. We would definitely recommend this property to our friends and love to stay there again.

Fabulous apartment in a beautiful location - we couldn't have wished for anything better and we would definitely like to return in the future. Wish Sicily's service was excellent throughout, from making the initial enquiry right through to the holiday itself. The local property manager also provided an excellent service despite having to be away for some of our stay.

A complete magic experience this house. From the views to the interior design, and from the location to the owner's welcome and help setting up. Luciana was great, and her house is a truly special place, with a beautiful history and atmosphere that can be easily compare to 5 stars standards. Ortigia itself is a wonderful treasure, and staying across the blueish sea, and surrounded by the rich Sicilian (Greek / Roman / Arab / Byzantine, etc) culture and architecture can really transport you to another time and space that you would never want to leave. We could stay there all year round! Casa a Ortigia is simply perfect from every angle you look at it, with very good restaurants everywhere you go, and such beautiful vibe that honestly we can't put into words. Thank you.

Peter and I just wanted to say how much we appreciated the beauty and graciousness of the apartment. It was so stylish yet very comfortable and relaxing. We especially enjoyed the lovely art work on the walls and tables as we have visited many of the world’s finest art museums and take great pleasure in art. The kitchen and pantry were so wonderfully fitted out, and we loved the welcoming pack of Cava, biscuits and fresh fruit and coffee and the well stocked cupboards. The olive oil which I understand is from groves owned by Luciana were of the highest quality and very much enjoyed. We are planning to return next year with my sister and brother in law. The week was most enjoyable and pleasant, and Roberta’s help with towed cars and not finding the cutlery was much appreciated, as well as her tips for good restaurants! It was invaluable to have someone local to help us out. I hope you have a very prosperous spring and summer season ahead. It is a lovely place and we do thank you for sharing it.
