Dedalo is a 4-bedroom seafront villa with direct access to the beach (photos No.44, 45, 46). Located on the outskirts of Sciacca on Sicily’s southern coast, it is close to a string of quiet beaches and some of Sicily’s most remarkable sights, from the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento to the ancient Greek temple at Selinunte.
The villa conveys a wonderful sense of space, in part due to its sweeping sea-facing terraces and lawns. A shaded dining terrace, equipped with barbecue (and ping pong table), is in prime position for leisurely al fresco dining while, on a lower terrace, a suite of outdoor armchairs and a sofa is the perfect setting for a sundowner with sunset views. When you want to feel the sand between your toes, stroll down from the garden along a 400m private path that leads from the lawn to the water’s edge.
Cleverly designed to let the outside in, the single-level villa has vast sliding glass doors that provide glorious sea views and lead onto a balcony that encircles much of the property. The open plan living room is comfortably furnished and spacious, with a lounge and dining area and a modern kitchen with attractive breakfast bar.
Bedrooms are simply but elegantly furnished, two with balcony access. Of the four double bedrooms, two can be used as a twin or double. The three bathrooms are extremely stylish, tiled in soft, neutral tones and all with showers (one with tub and shower). Top spot is the freestanding slipper bath in the master bathroom where bath time comes with a sea view via a vast picture window.

The area
This stretch of southern Sicilian coastline boasts a string of mainly sandy beaches. At Capo San Marco, close to Sciacca, narrow beaches and shallow waters are a good option for younger visitors, while Sovareto, to the east of Sciacca, is a popular spot for snorkellers. Slightly further afield, other notable beaches include Solette at Portopalo di Menfi, and the sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters that fringe the Torre Salsa nature reserve. For a slightly alternative bathing experience, head for the dazzling white steps of the Scala dei Turchi in Realmonte.
The villa is around 10 minutes by car from Sciacca (5 km). The town is best known for its hot springs and spas, and its February Mardi Gras Carnival, one of the largest in Sicily. Although essentially a fishing town, you will find plenty of bars and restaurants and a lively atmosphere in the town’s piazzas.
Dedalo is also well-placed for visiting several of Sicily’s ancient ruins. Two of the island’s greats are the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento and the temple of Selinunte, in a picturesque setting close to Mazara del Vallo. If you visit Selinunte, try to squeeze in a visit to the Cave di Cusa (13 miles), the site of the quarries used by the ancient Greeks to supply the stone for the temples.
If you want to dig deeper into Sicily’s Arab heritage, make tracks for Mazara del Vallo where a historic Kasbah quarter reveals a strong Arab influence. Other highlights include some stunning architecture, a bustling harbour and, of course, the magnificent Dancing Satyr statue, thought to date back to between the 4th and 1st centuries and pulled from the depths of the sea in 1998.

07-01-2023 -The cottage is by far the best we have booked in Sicily in years. The location, the view, the house, the equipment and cleanliness, just perfect. There is nothing to complain about. The allocation of bedrooms and bathrooms allows for private space. The path to the beach is graveled and mostly private. Some surefootedness is required. It takes about 5 minutes downhill and correspondingly more back. In summary, the best choice you can make.
