Description

CIR: 19088009B402868

Boasting the best location in town, this traditional 5-bedroom apartment is situated right in the heart of the extraordinary town of Ragusa Ibla. Step straight out into the town’s main square, a stunning piazza that sits in the shadow of the Duomo di San Giorgio. With an excellent selection of sandy beaches just 20km away, the apartment is ideal for groups of friends or several families who want to mix and match days on the beach with exploring the baroque towns and countryside of south east Sicily.

The entrance to the apartment is in the main Piazza Duomo. The décor is classically Sicilian, with cool stone and marble flooring, hand-painted ceilings and antique furniture and rugs. The apartment is essentially divided into two. The main apartment, on the first floor, has a reception, a large living room, a dining room and kitchen. There is also a small outside space with a table and chairs which is ideal for breakfast. Four double bedrooms are on this floor, two with balconies that look straight out over the main piazza, and each of the bedrooms has an en suite bathroom.

Additional features at Piazza Duomo 36 include access to a Spa situated just a short walk from the apartment.

The area

Ragusa is split into two quite distinct areas: Ragusa Superiore, the more modern upper part of town which was re-built after the 1693 earthquake; and Ragusa Ibla, the more atmospheric of the two. Dominated by the gloriously baroque Duomo di San Giorgio (read about Saint George celebration >>), Ragusa Ibla is a mass of narrow lanes and alleyways, of elaborately-sculpted balconies and big views over the countryside beyond. There are numerous palazzi and churches to visit but essentially, this is the best place we know for an evening ‘passeggiata’, for dinner at one of the many restaurants and for people-watching with a gelato. Local events include the Estate Iblea, a summer festival of music and events, and in October, a festival of busking and street entertainment, ‘Ibla Buskers’.

For more baroque architecture, visit the towns of Modica and Scicli or head north to Palazzolo Acreide which has several magnificent churches and an important archaeological area. Syracuse is around 1.5 hours by car, and well worth the journey.

When you need a break from all this baroque beauty, make your way south to the beach. Punta Secca is the site of the beachfront home of the fictional TV detective Montalbano and has a very pleasant beach or choose from the wide sandy beaches at Pozzallo, Donnalucata or Sampieri.

On booking this property I thought it couldn’t possibly be as good as the photographs, but actually it is even more beautiful, absolutely exquisite! The apartment retains many original features and is full of beautiful paintings and furniture, whilst still providing ‘mod cons’ such as dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and a very efficient air conditioning system. The bedrooms are amazing, and each has its own modern bathroom. The large balcony is the perfect place to sit and watch visitors to the piazza. The view of the church is wonderful, day and night, and it is also pretty quiet- the bells ring briefly maybe once a day, and we were lucky enough to watch a wedding during our stay. We stayed with our three teenaged children, and it was perfect for them, plenty of space in the apartment, and the freedom to explore Ragusa by themselves. Ragusa is also the perfect base for exploring the east of Sicily. Claudia, the owner of the apartment, was wonderful, meeting us to explain everything, recommending restaurants and places to visit, and providing a lovely welcome pack. Her son was also extremely helpful in showing us where to park our car, and how to navigate the extremely narrow streets! I have absolutely nothing bad to say about our stay, it was magical. Thank you Claudia!!

It is a spacious, very grand, clean apartment. Renovated respecting it's origin but adding a touch of today with amazing lighting everywhere which enhances the beauty of every room. Situated at the very heart of Ragusa, next to the beautiful church and in the buzzing square. You can sit on the balcony and watch the world go by or in the morning have your coffee on the quaint terrace in your pajamas, or enjoy the sun on the roof terrace. The welcome we received was unique, homemade cake, focacia, bread as well as everything we needed for the first few days which made such a difference after a very long day. The owners have thought about everything including meeting us on the outskirts of the town to help us 'navigate' our way through the narrow streets. The beds were extremely comfortable with lovely crisp linen. You must be aware that as in many towns on the continent the bells still ring at the church! The cafe/bar downstairs must be mentioned, Maria and her wonderful family/team welcomed us every day, best coffee EVER, warm cornettos (croissant) every morning.....she even bought mugs to accommodate our 'americanos'!!! The natural friendliness was so refreshing! If you go to Ragusa you MUST stop at this cafe! We are now converts to Illy coffee!!!!! Freshly pressed orange juice, great gelato, cold draugh beer....and if you just want a salad, they make a good one! Everything is fresh and always served with a smile!!!! - The information and photos provided was true to reality. Payment was easy. Communication clear.

Beautifully renovated apartment in Ragusa, with wonderful original features and incredible view of the Duomo. Ragusa Ibla is a beautiful Baroque town very well located for the other Baroque riches of south east Sicily. Excellent restaurants nearby. This large apartment is so relaxing and comfortable, with an elegantly old style Sicilian salone and traditional dining room, all blending with other smartly decorated bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. Loved it.

Assolutamente consigliato.
