We’re well into summer here in Sicily, with temperatures creeping up into the mid-20’s and the sea gradually warming up. Visit Sicily in May or June and catch the first rays of summer sun while you idle away a few hours on a blissfully quiet beach or linger over a leisurely lunch at a seafront restaurant. With over 1,000 km of coastline, the beaches vary enormously, from long stretches of sand to small stony coves and dramatic rock formations such as the Scala dei Turchi in the south.
For many of our early summer guests, May and June offer the perfect weather conditions to explore the island’s nature reserves such as Vendicari in the south east or Zingaro in the north west. As well as some lovely walking routes, both reserves also feature gorgeous pocket-sized sandy beaches. Away from the coast, a stroll through the Pantalica near Syracuse is another popular option.
June is also the start of a long summer of lively festivals and events, often linked to local food or patron saints. If you’re staying near Acitrezza on the east coast, don’t miss the Sagra del Pesce (8-10 June) and with it the chance to savour freshly-grilled swordfish, sprinkled with oil, lemon and oregano and accompanied by a glass of chilled white wine. Further south and a little later in the month, Marzamemi’s main piazza hosts the Festa del Pesce Azzurro (23-24 June).
