Holiday lettings near Sicily's Street Food Markets
If you enjoy discovering a new destination through its food, take a look at our holiday villas within easy reach of the street food markets in Palermo or Catania. Explore the markets independently or book into a street food market tour in either city to find out what makes Sicilians tick!
Ballarò, in the heart of Palermo is fast becoming one of the world’s best known street food markets. Reminiscent of an Arab souk, with some stalls selling clothing, toys and household wares, it is the food that steals the show. This is a good place to shop for fruit and vegetables, for bags of mussels or swordfish steaks but the real attraction is seizing the moment and grabbing an ‘on the go’ arancina or large slab of sfincione.
Catania’s La Pescheria is one of Italy’s largest fish markets, a heaving mass of wriggling, squirming fish, plump pink prawns and tangled octopus. The fishmongers are as much of a spectacle as the fish, standing amongst pools of water and fishy remains, bellowing the price of their latest catch and brandishing ferocious looking knives that glint in the early morning sun.
The market has been around for hundreds of years, setting up every day (except Sunday) in Piazza Alonzo. In the streets around the piazza, other stalls sell fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, and cheese produced in the local mountain villages.
