Villas and holiday homes near Palermo
For anyone planning a holiday rental in Sicily, staying in Palermo is an excellent accomodation and introduction to the rest of island. Colourful, vibrant and supremely atmospheric, Palermo is a multi-layered city, clearly bearing the stamp of its former Arab, Norman and Spanish rulers. Its narrow streets and animated street markets are big attractions but there are also grand boulevards with designer shops, Baroque churches and magnificent palaces. Enjoy opera or ballet at the impressive Teatro Massimo and dine out on casarecce pasta with swordfish at unpretentious trattorie.
There are several noteworthy attractions in the city including the Churches of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio and of San Cataldo, while at the beautiful Norman palace, the Palatine Chapel’s creamy marble is inlaid with gold leaf and walls are swathed in Byzantine mosaics. Pause at the Quattro Canti, the focal point of four key parts of the old town centre, to admire the sculptures, and take a stroll through the gardens of the Villa Giulia. A short drive from Palermo, the town of Monreale is home to Sicily’s magnificent Norman cathedral where the Byzantine mosaics are considered to be amongst the most spectacular in the world.
Our villas in and near Palermo are also a good choice if you are looking for a week of pure relaxation and sunshine: many of our holiday home rentals on the Palermo coast have pools and the area is blessed with plenty of sandy beaches. The main beach resort is Mondello which features a lovely stretch of sand and some excellent restaurants. Several of our Palermo holiday rentals, to the west of the city, are close to the beaches around Terrasini and Castellammare del Golfo.
