Cool temperatures means that the focus shifts away from the beach and swimming and into the heart of the local village or town where locals keep the Christmas spirit alive and kicking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christmas Presepi <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many homes and the vast majority of churches in Sicily display a presepe (nativity scene). In some cases, these are \u2018Presepi viventi\u2019 \u2013 living nativity scenes where locals dress up and re-enact the Nativity between Christmas Day and Epiphany with the privilege of representing baby Jesus bestowed upon the youngest baby in the village. Those at Ispica in <a title=\"villas in the south-east sicily\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/en\/holiday-rentals\/villas-and-holiday-homes-in-the-south-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">south east Sicily<\/a>, and Custonaci, in north west Sicily, are amongst the most dramatic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/presepi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-570 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/presepi-300x95.jpg\" alt=\"Presepe Vivente Vaccheria 2011\" width=\"300\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/presepi-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/presepi.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Epiphany and La Befana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6th January marks the end of the Christmas festivities but another reason for children to celebrate, thanks to the arrival of the witch-like La Befana, who hands out sweets to children who have been good and lumps of coal (actually black sugar lumps) to those who have not. Siculiana celebrates the traditional \u201cCarovana dei Re Magi\u201d (photo), a historical procession of the Court of Aragon of Catania, in memory of the three Magi visiting Baby Jesus. Crowds are virtually non-existent and you can get to experience a more authentic side to the island.
