Written by native Sicilian, Andrea Camilleri<\/strong>, who died earlier this year, the televised novels and short stories are a wonderful snapshot of the island, not least through the fictional detective\u2019s love of great food!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that exploring a destination through its literature is a great way to get a feel for a place before you arrive. So if you enjoy reading, set aside some time as the evenings draw in to curl up with a good book, ready for next summer\u2019s holiday in Sicily!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Camilleri\u2019s Montalbano<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Born in Porto Empedocle, Camilleri set his detective series mainly in the south eastern city of Ragusa (the fictional town of Vigata) and its surrounding towns. Written in a mixture of Italian and Sicilian dialect, the books and TV series have been hugely popular. Visit his iconic beachfront house at Punta Secca and the fictional police HQ in what is in fact the town hall in nearby Scicli. Other Sicilian locations that feature in his stories include <a title=\"Tindari, Sicily\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/en\/tindari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tindari<\/a> in his 2000 novel, Excursion to Tindari (La Gita a Tindari).<\/p>\n<p>Piazza Duomo 36, a 4-bedroom apartment set on the main piazza in Ragusa Ibla is an excellent base for exploring Ragusa and the locations featured in Camilleri\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2495\" style=\"width: 966px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/en\/ragusa\/apartments-in-sicily\/piazza-duomo-36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2495 noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2495 size-full\" title=\"heading to Piazza Duomo 36, Ragusa Ibla\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/F4A4340.jpg\" alt=\"heading to Piazza Duomo 36, Ragusa Ibla\" width=\"966\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/F4A4340.jpg 966w, https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/F4A4340-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/F4A4340-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">heading to Piazza Duomo 36, Ragusa Ibla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Pirandello and Sicily<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Novelist, short story writer, poet and Nobel prize-winner, Pirandello is best-known for his plays exploring the relationship between reality and sanity, such as Six Characters in Search of an Author. His coastal house in Agrigento is now a museum dedicated to his life and works, with evocative black and white family photographs adorning the walls of the house which is also his final resting place. The writer\u2019s tomb is in the garden. Lampedusa lived in Palermo and it was here that he wrote his reflections on Sicilian life. Read the book or watch the Visconti film, then see how much of Sicily\u2019s decadent past remains on a tour of Lampedusa\u2019s Palermo. Villa Stella is a 4-bedroom villa with pool and direct access to the beach, just a short drive from Palermo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2865\" style=\"width: 966px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/en\/terrasini\/villas-in-sicily\/villa-stella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2865 size-full\" title=\"Villa Stella, Terrasini\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/M3_4194.jpg\" alt=\"Villa Stella, Terrasini\" width=\"966\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/M3_4194.jpg 966w, https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/M3_4194-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wishsicily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/M3_4194-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Villa Stella, Terrasini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Sciascia and the Mafia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sciascia\u2019s \u2018The Day of the Owl\u2019 (Il Giorno della Civetta) remains one of Italy\u2019s greatest crime novels about the Mafia.\u00a0 Find out more at the Sciascia Foundation in Racalmuto in the province of Agrigento, where he lived.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Verga and 19<sup>th<\/sup> century Sicily<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Verga\u2019s portrayal of the island in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century is said to be one of the most authentic descriptions of Sicily, with his most famous work, I Malavoglia, revealing the extreme poverty and hard, daily life of the Sicilians. The book was set in Acitrezza, close to Acireale on the east coast, and a small museum is still open in the town today.
