Villa Punta Secca This property has been verified by our local team in Sicily Villas in Sicily in Santa Croce Camerina

Description

A classic Sicilian villa, very close to the sandy beaches of Sicily’s south east and almost on the doorstep of many of the film locations used for the popular Inspector Montalbano series. Several of the region’s finest baroque towns, Scicli, Modica and Ragusa, are close by.

The spacious grounds are filled with palm trees and Mediterranean vegetation, with shady pergolas that set the scene for al fresco dining and lazy afternoon snoozes. Hideaway corners of the garden are furnished with stone benches and tables and chairs, ensuring that there is always a sheltered spot under the dappled light of a tree in the traditional courtyard. There is plenty of space for soaking up the sun, on terraces edged by planted borders, around the pool. This is slightly separate from the villa, accessed either via the main gate or via a passageway that leads directly from the courtyard. At one end of the pool, there is another covered dining area, with a barbecue and ping pong table.

The villa is set on two levels, built around a plant-filled central courtyard. On the ground floor, the main living/dining room and kitchen are converted from the original stables, filled with antique furniture and trinkets and oozing with atmosphere. The kitchen is accessed directly from the courtyard, piled high with Sicilian ceramics and with a wood burning oven in addition to all mod cons (dishwasher, fridge-freezer, hob). This opens out into the dining room which has a large dining table and bench seating. A second kitchen, with dining table and living room, provides an alternative living area.

Bedrooms are simply furnished. Three of the bedrooms (two doubles, one twin) are on the ground floor, together with three modern bathrooms. The fourth bedroom with en-suite bathroom with shower in on the first floor, alongside a second living room with double sofabed (no aircond.) which has sliding doors on to a terrace.

The area

The villa is ideally situated both for trips to the sea and the many splendid beaches along the coast, all within easy driving distance, and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful UNESCO-protected Baroque towns such as Scicli, Ragusa and Noto where guests can also shop and find several fine restaurants. Siracusa and its ancient Greek theatre is also within easy driving distance as it is the Vendicari Nature Reserve, a truly paradise for the birdwatching lovers.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Marina di Ragusa have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence. The beach at Marina di Modica is great for surfers and windsurfers and has sun beds and umbrella for rent. There are also several lidos at Sampieri where the beach is slightly wilder and fringed with dunes.

The villa is also located a few miles from the set of the BBC Four’s popular Inspector Montalbano series. A unique chance to experience first-hand the magnificent settings of the most beloved character written by the famous Andrea Camilleri. For golf lovers, the Donnafugata Golf Club is at easy drive distance from the villa.

Despite a very late arrival we received a very warm welcome from Claudia and Vicenzo with a meal provided. The beautifully restored farmhouse with flagstone floors in the kitchens is large and spacious with plenty of room for guests to find a quiet spot for themselves if needed. The courtyard or patio area is delightful with well tended flower beds and the welcome shade of a large carob tree, with outdoor dining and sitting areas. The separate pool and barbecue area is also beautiful, with a pool large enough for the keenest of swimmers, surrounded by palm trees and bananas. It is difficult to drag yourselves away from such an idyllic place but we managed trips as far afield as the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento and Taormina, with shorter trips to places such as Scicli, Noto and Modica (but not to Ragusa Ibla which rather shocked Claudia - that will have to wait for another visit). If you prefer sea bathing, the beaches are only a short drive away.

The house sprawls over a large area and is certainly big enough, and well-equipped enough for 2 or 3 families (depending on how you all room together). It's very charmingly decorated and feels very much like the family home it is, and the outdoor courtyard and the separate pool and BBQ area are both wonderful places to hang out in. The beds are very firm, which was fine by us, but worth mentioning. Excellent air con was in 3 out for 4 bedrooms. In terms of the area, there's a range of little local beaches nearby in Torre Mezzo, Punta Secca and Casuzze to the bigger (and busier) spots like Sampieri and Marina Di Ragusa in under 30 minutes drive; Ragusa, Modica and Scicli all in around 45 mins drive; and Santa Croce nearby has bakeries, butchers, dairy shop and a weekly farmers market. Claudia and Vicenzo were very helpful and hospitable, preparing a light lunch for our arrival, offering eating and beaching suggestions and quick to answer or solve any queries. Highly recommended.

The booking process was straight forward and the company were very quick to reply to all of my queries. All my requests were met. Claudia and Vincenzo, the owners of the property, went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. They provided an excellent reception for us and were on call throughout our holiday to answer any questions we had and to recommend us places to visit. The property was splendid with plenty of room for 3 couples and very accommodating for children too. The swimming pool and grounds were absolutely fabulous. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this property to friends and I would love to return soon.

Just a note to say that we had a great time staying at Villa Punta Secca last week. The villa is fabulous, clean, spacious and all our needs were catered for. The pool area is particularly delightful and the courtyard area lovely for alfresco dining. The villa is highly recommended for your clients. Many thanks. Julian
