The area

The apartment is ideally situated both for trips to the sea and the many splendid beaches along the coast, all within easy driving distance, and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Baroque towns such as Modica, Scicli, and Ragusa where guests can also shop and find several fine restaurants. Siracusa and its ancient Greek theatre is also within easy driving distance as it is the Vendicari Nature Reserve, a truly paradise for the birdwatching lovers.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Marina di Ragusa have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence. The beach at Marina di Modica is great for surfers and windsurfers and has sun beds and umbrella for rent. There are also several lidos at Sampieri where the beach is slightly wilder and fringed with dunes.

The villa is also located a few miles from the set of the BBC Four’s popular Inspector Montalbano series. A unique chance to experience first-hand the magnificent settings of the most beloved character written by the famous Andrea Camilleri.

This is a unique and beautiful house, with everything you could need. It is a great base for exploring that part of Sicily. Only issues were the noisiness of the air con (which they never really resolved) and that one of the rooms is not as nice as the others, so a bit of wrangling about who slept where. Would recommend getting their chef in one night to cook. Worth being aware that it is on a very steep hill with lots of steps or a steep slope and you can't get the car very close, so beware if you have mobility issues.

Owner's response

Dear Elizabeth, thank you for your kind review. I am sorry for the trouble regarding the air con, as we informed you the noisiness was due to an unexpected malfunctioning of a valve which could not be replaced in time during your stay since it was not in storage of our maintanance. After a few days it was totally fixed and the quiet has been absolutely guaranteed again. The upstair room is smaller than the other two but the communicating terrace gives you more space outside in good season and anyway the design and the quality of the materials are totally the same used in the other rooms. The location of the property is just in front of the cathedral of S. Giorgio, at the beginning of upper Modica, which is much more quiet than lower Modica, with more shops but noisy traffic; unless during special feasts, there is usually on street parking from the property, which can be reached in 5 min walk down a normal slope without steps or up a flight of steps on the right side of the cathedral. The whole town is marked by hills and steps which of course could be a trouble for elderly or people having mobility issues as you have correctly advised, but it is also true that the irregolar topography, the narrow streets and the steps represent a landing mark of its beautiful historic center... Thank you, we will be pleased to welcome you again in future. Best wishes, Luca

the time passed away very (too) fast. We are back in Germany, but our minds are still in Modica. We enjoyed the peacefull location, the old houses of Modica, the view from the patio over St. George or simply the wonderful arranged garden. We saw pictures from the first moments of the renovation and have to congratulate you for your vision of how to develop this old house to such an unique villa. We want to thank you for these great moments we had in Sicilia. And, of course, don´t want to forget to mention, that Amelia was a very, very kindly person, who helped us all the time.

We were lucky enough to be some of the first guests to stay at Hortus. From the moment we walked through the understated (but very stylish) gates, into the lovely, tranquil garden with the fruit and figs trees we knew we’d found somewhere very special. Hortus blends the old with the new seamlessly. Luca and Paulo have renovated the property using, wherever possible, natural Sicilian materials and stones. Light streams into the ultra modern kitchen (with all the fixtures and fittings you would expect) through huge glass doors that open out into the garden with its plunge pool, BBQ and breathtaking views of San Giorgio cathedral. Inside you get a sense of how old the property actually is. Many of the original architectural characteristics are not only highlighted, but made into beautiful features of the property. Each of the bedrooms has been themed around the elements and the indoor spa is a revelation. Much of the furniture has been created by artisan producers for Hortus and they are art pieces in their own right. The huge garden table (made of lava from Mount Etna, I believe), the specially commissioned washbasins in the bedrooms to the antique lace bed throws to name a few are all sophisticated, elegant, artistic, understated yet always functional. If that is not enough to tempt you, Amelia is on hand to help you organise any/all aspect of your holiday from restaurant recommendations and bookings, to car hire, day trip planning, shopping and, given enough notice, she can even organise a chef to cook for you. It’s always bitter-sweet to leave rave reviews about a property, whilst it’s lovely to share your experience with everyone it’s also like sharing a guilty secret. And that’s what Hortus feels like; a beautiful, secret Sicilian hideaway, amongst the most charming, friendly people, in one of the most picturesque cities in Sicily.
